Applied Behavior Therapy

What is Applied Behavior Therapy?

Children Playing

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. It is commonly used to improve social, communication, self-care, and learning skills, as well as improve poor academic performances.

ABA commonly involves the development of individualized treatment plans, tailored to the individual's strengths and weaknesses and promotes changes in behavior through positive reinforcement procedures.

Many experts consider ABA to be the gold-standard treatment for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as well as other developmental and psychological disorders. These may include Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD), anxiety disorders, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD-NOS), and Processing Disorder. (PLEASE NOTE: Funding sources may limit the use of ABA services with diagnoses beyond ASD)

The goal of applied behavior therapy programs, like ABA, is to support the individual as they develop the skills which will allow them to become independent and successful.
